The Import Nearest Locations command fills in the Location field for every geocache with the name of the closest landmark (a town center, highway interchange, or other location). Before using the Import Nearest Locations command, you will need to create a GPX file with a waypoint for each landmark in your area. The state data files at http://www.topografix.com/data.asp are a good place to start, but you should trim these files down to just a few dozen placenames in the area where you geocache.
When you first open a GPX Pocket Query, the Location column will be empty.
To assign a nearest location to each geocache, do the following:
- On the , click .
The Import Nearest Locations dialog will appear. Select the GPX file containing your local landmarks.
The Location column now shows the nearest location to each geocache.
Note
- The Import Nearest Locations command can only calculate distances - it cannot look at boundaries to determine what town a geocache is in. The Kalousdian Land Night Hike geocache listed above is actually in the south-west corner of the town of Stow, but it is closer to the center of Hudson than to the center of Stow.
